About us

We’ve insured pets - and
only pets for over 45 years

At Petplan, we’re all about pets. Big or small, young or old – we know you want the best for them. The health of animals and the joy they bring to their owners has always been at the heart of what we do. In fact, it is the reason we exist.

Pet insurance, designed by a pet owner

The Petplan story began in 1976 with Patsy Bloom, a dog owner who was worried about her pet.

Her beloved Yorkshire terrier, Jamie, needed several unexpected trips to the vet, and the bills were mounting up. She wanted to help owners like her get the best care for their animals, without worrying about money.

So Patsy decided to set up a new kind of insurance company – one that was just for pets. The idea was a hit with animal lovers across the UK, and the rest is history.

Patsy’s legacy lives on today. We’re all animal lovers at Petplan, and as pet owners we know how important it is for your insurer to have your back when your best friend needs help. We’ve been there.

That’s why we design our pet insurance to pay out and why pet experts such as vets and breeders choose to work with us. Petplan is part of Allianz Insurance, the largest insurer in the world and in 2022, we paid out £429 million to help pets get the best veterinary care.

£429 million claims paid in 2022 to help keep the nation’s pets healthy.

90% of claims are paid in 5 working days, and we can even pay your vet directly so you don’t have to find the money first.

98% of claims are paid on our Covered for Life® policy.

£38 million given to animal charities in the last two decades.

Meet the experts

We work closely with leading pet health experts so we can offer you the best possible pet advice you can trust.

Patsy and David grew the Petplan business by word of mouth, forming relationships with pet experts who shared their ambition to help pet owners cover the cost of veterinary care for their beloved animals.

Over 45 years later over 3,000 veterinary practices still choose to work in partnership with Petplan as they see day in day out how our insurance helps pets.

We design our policies to pay out, and vets know that Petplan covers things that other insurers don’t. For example, some policies do not cover dental illness, some will only pay a certain amount towards specific conditions such as cruciate ligament injuries, and some do not cover behavioral conditions.

We also work in partnership with over 1,200 animal charities - large and small - and over the past two decades have given these organisations more than £38 million to help rescue and rehome pets.

We have a team visiting and supporting animal charities across the country, and even provide 4 weeks free insurance for rehomed pets. We also offer our Covered For Life ® insurance to all pets rehomed by our charity partners, even if they are over our usual age limit.

Many more pet experts choose to partner with Petplan too, such as breeders, microchippers and the UK’s leading pet retailer Pets at Home.
