Will You Be My Pooch-Friend?

It's been a month since Valentines Day and are you still lonely? Well don't let those good-looking guys and gals pass you by. Petplan have discovered that one of the best ways to bag yourself a date is by having a pet. In fact Petplan, the UK's leading pet insurance provider has learnt that pets can make and break human relationships.

Petplan customers revealed that their pets play an important role in every stage of their owner's relationships, especially when it comes to choosing the right partner. Nearly a third of dog and cat owners say they would incorporate their animal into any legal agreement before marriage. Also a tenth of cat owners told Petplan that their feline friends play an important part in determining who they form a relationship with. So in the case of "it's me or the dog" - the dog often wins!

In response to the needs of the growing number of UK pet owners, last year SpeedDater, the leader in singles' events began hosting evenings specifically for people with pets.

SpeedDater CEO, Max Polyakov says: "Finding a partner that shares the same interests is very important to all our event attendees and a very high percentage of them are animal lovers, so it makes perfect sense to hold events catering for people who are passionate about their pets"

Ben McIlveen from London regularly uses his dog to find dates, he says: "I often spend Saturday afternoon in Hyde Park with my dog. He's the perfect wing-man to start talking to girls!"

Pippa Hutchison, animal behaviour consultant comments, "Pets are a predictable presence in our ever changing lives; providing unconditional love, emotional support and companionship. Therefore, when a new partner comes along it is not surprising that they need to love the pet as much as the person!

"The bond between pets and owners is astounding as many Brits choose to include their furry companions in everyday activities. Nearly three quarters of pet owners told Petplan that they watch TV with their pets, so it comes as no surprise that some owners want to spend more time with their cats and dogs than potential dates."

Petplan have provided tips for how to use your furry wingman to find a date:

  • Take your dog for a long walk in a park. Throw numerous toys in your crush's direction. Who can resist helping a cute dog fetch a frisbee?
  • Enrol your dog in an agility class, such as dog dancing. You may meet a like-minded mate or at least provide you with an amusing conversation starter. 'Have you seen my dog's foxtrot?'
  • Browse the pet food aisles and ask for nutrition advice from fellow shoppers. Caring about your cat's calorie intake will indicate that you care about yours.
