A Single Man's Best Friend

Forget Bridget Jones-style single girls keeping cats for company, our latest consumer data, reveals that more single males are becoming proud pet owners. We have seen an increase of 19%* in young, single men signing-up to our pet insurance policies.

The petro-sexual pet owner is split up into two main types of men; the hopeful singleton who uses his pet to attract romantic attention or the heartbroken soul enjoying the unconditional love of a pet. He is typically between 21 and 27 and lives alone. Whether he's on the hunt for love, not quite ready to settle down or shunning relationships and turning to the animal kingdom for company, this new trend is further proof of the UK's love of their pets. 'Petro-sexuals' are normally canine lovers with 44% owning dogs, but can have cats too as 36% of petro-sexuals prefer feline friends.

Offering hope for those single men out there, our 2011 Pet Census study shows that 62% of pet owners say that a pet has boosted their social life.

Owning a dog especially boosts the chances of a social meeting with regular walks and training groups an ideal place to meet like-minded people. 74% of dog owners feel that having a pet allows them to socialise more, whilst 70% state that becoming a dog owner has given them greater confidence, a bonus to those hoping to find a compatible partner.

The other camp, comprising of those unlucky in love, reveals that 26% of males admit to being more comfortable talking to their pet than a member of the opposite sex.

Our Head of Marketing Isabella von Mesterhazy, commented: "This new trend in young male pet owners is a clear indication that pets are still quite literally 'man's best friend' particularly dogs. In what has been a tough year for many, pets have never been a more valued companion and we're seeing new customers who want the very best protection for their furry friend."
