Why take out puppy insurance?

Introducing a new puppy to the household is an exciting yet daunting prospect. A puppy's needs are the same as any new addition in the family, and as owners we know that their first few weeks in the home can be challenging. As your puppy becomes more familiar with its surroundings it will naturally be more confident - whether within the home or while out being exercised. Unfortunately, your 'four-legged friend' won't always acknowledge their own limits and this is why it is important to have puppy insurance in place from an early age.

Petplan puppy insurance

Petplan offers a range of puppy insurance policies which all include a vet fees benefit to help cover the cost of veterinary treatment. Petplan's Pet Value product is a 12-month policy and provides £3,000 worth of vet fee cover for each injury or illness during that 12-month period. If you are seeking a more comprehensive policy then a Covered for Life plan will help cover the costs of ongoing treatment for chronic and long-term illnesses. Treating longer-term conditions can require several trips to the vet within the policy year and with treatment costs on the rise, it is important to have your puppy insurance policy in place before that first unexpected visit to the vet.

All Petplan puppy insurance policies provide Third Party Liability cover as standard. By their very nature, a puppy will seek interaction with other dogs and their owners, and sometimes with foreign items like cars. Unfortunately we cannot always be there to stop them so in the event that your puppy causes an accident to property or a person, you can rest assured that your puppy insurance policy will provide cover up to either £1million or £3million per incident.

Is puppy insurance really necessary?

Like all animals, puppies can be susceptible to certain conditions. The first few months in a new home is when they are likely to develop any digestive or skin problems and, as keen explorers, their carefree nature can do them more harm than good.

One condition puppies can contract are Urinary Tract Infections (UTI). Urinary tract infections are caused by germs, usually bacteria that enter the urethra - this can lead to a bladder infection. There are a range of symptoms dependent on the nature of the infection and an increase in frequency and discomfort when passing water are most common. If ignored, a UTI can damage other areas of the puppy's internal urinary system, such as the kidneys. UTIs are just one of the many conditions that your Petplan puppy insurance policy would provide cover for.

Skin problems, hernias and roundworms are other issues puppies are prone to, but if caught early can be treated easily. It is important to be especially observant of your puppy's behaviour in the first few months of ownership as this is the time when they are most prone to succumbing to an illness. If you suspect your puppy is unwell it is important to seek immediate veterinary advice before the condition has a chance to develop further.

When does Petplan puppy insurance start?

Petplan's puppy insurance policies will provide cover from the age of just 6 weeks (8 weeks from a Petplan breeder) which means that whether you've just introduced your puppy into their new surroundings, or they're a few months into finding their feet, Petplan puppy insurance can help cover the cost of treatment when things go wrong.

Terms, conditions and excesses apply and may be varied at renewal.
