Does my dog need to wear a collar?
This article contains: dog pet petplan microchipping dogs

Absolutely. It is a legal requirement for dogs to wear a collar in public. To avoid a hefty fine, owners must also ensure that the dog displays their name and address.

By law, when a dog is in a public place, it must wear a collar. This – or a tag attached to the collar – must also bear its owner's name and address.

Additionally worth knowing is that owners can be fined up to £2000 if they don't comply. (There are a few exceptions, mainly working dogs).

Although it's not mandatory for the collar or tag to also display the owner's postcode and phone number, it is advisable, in order to aid a pet's quick return if he or she is lost.

MICROCHIPPING IS NOT ENOUGH

While many owners believe that if their dog is microchipped, it doesn't need to have a named collar or tag – this is incorrect. ID is still required (and is also needed in addition to the tag a dog return company might provide).

However, in addition to the legally required ID, microchipping is highly recommended (and set to become mandatory in 2016) because it makes it easier to identify and return stolen dogs whose collars or tags may have been cut off.

For more information about the laws that govern dog ownership, we recommend reading our guide to the Animal Welfare Act 2007, which explains in layman's terms recent changes to the rules and regulations related to dog ownership.

First of all I would like to say wonderful blog! I had a quick question which I'd like to ask if you do not mind. I was curious to find out how you center yourself and clear your head before writing.I have had difficulty clearing my thoughts in getting my thoughts out there. I do take pleasure in writing but it just seems like the first 10 to 15 minutes are generally wasted simply just trying to figure out how to begin. Any recommendations or hints? Many thanks!

Hmm it looks like your blog ate my first comment (it was super long) so I guess I'll just sum it up what I had written and say, I'm thoroughly enjoying your blog.I as well am an aspiring blog writer but I'm still new to everything. Do you have any tips for rookie blog writers?I'd certainly appreciate it.

Wow. I can't believe I have only just found out that it's illegal not to have a collar and tags on a dog. I had a springer for 13 years and now have 2 cockers and they have never worn collars. The way spaniels rummage about in deep cover I'd always be worried they would get stuck. You learn something new everyday ;)

hiya all ...I only just found today regarding the dog collar.. my working cocker use to wear a harness and when he nearly hung himself, thankfully the catch snapped and going over the ground covered we found the harness caught on a baird wire, we stopped using them..so a 5 pound collar has saved me a fine of over 2000k
