When Should You Get Pet Insurance?

From picking their bed to teaching them their first trick, getting a new dog is an amazing adventure. And it can be easy to forget about dog insurance in all the excitement. So how do you know where to start, and why is it so important?

It doesn’t matter how old or young your beloved pet is – an accident or illness could happen at any time. That’s why it’s important to make sure you have pet insurance from the moment you take them home. Because if your pet suffers an injury or develops an illness before they’re insured, unfortunately that condition won’t be covered by most pet insurance policies – including ours.

Insurance for younger pets

It’s best to insure your pet as soon as you can. And if you choose one of our Covered For Life® pet insurance policies, as long as you renew your cover each year without a break, we’ll continue to pay claims for ongoing conditions.

Our lifetime pet insurance is available for cats up until their 10th birthday, while for rabbits it’s their 5th and for dogs it’s their 8th. For lifetime dog insurance, some dog breeds need to have a policy taken out before their 5th birthday.

Insurance for older pets

Your older pet needs insurance too – especially before they start to feel the aches and pains of ageing. If you haven’t had pet insurance before but your cat or dog is too senior for our Covered For Life® policy, don’t worry. There’s no upper age limit on our Petplan Essential policy for cats and dogs. This policy provides cover for each new condition for up to 12 months – so if your cat needs an operation on their hip, depending on your exclusions it could give you peace of mind that their treatment is covered for the next 12 months.

Premiums

We want you to take the best possible care of your pet, so we’d never do anything to discourage you from getting your dog, cat or rabbit treated when they’re unwell or injured. We won’t increase your premium as a direct result of a claim you make. However, your pet’s age, increasing vet costs and advancements in veterinary medicine can all affect the premium you pay. This means your premium will increase over the lifetime of your policy.

We’ve been providing dog, cat and rabbit insurance for more than 40 years and carefully calculate our premiums based on the size, breed, location and age of your pet – as fairly and as accurately as we can. Why not get a quote today?

All our policies are subject to terms and conditions, so please read these carefully to understand what you are covered for.
