Petplan’s £1 million gift for rescue animals

We are thrilled to announce that we have now raised £1 million for our friends at animal charity Blue Cross.

These valuable funds, generated over the past 10 years, have contributed to the running costs of a dozen rehoming centres for dogs, cats, horses and rabbits, as well as four major animal hospitals across the UK.

Kim Hamilton, Chief Executive of Blue Cross, says: ‘As a charity that doesn’t receive any government or lottery funding, we rely solely on donations. Petplan understands that our primary focus is animal welfare and the income generated from working with them has enabled us to give even more pets a healthy life in a happy home.’

Petplan works with more animal rehoming charities than any other insurance provider, offering four weeks’ free insurance to adopters of dogs, cats and rabbits. The chances are that if you adopted your dog, cat or rabbit from an animal centre, they will have been sent home with free pet insurance from Petplan, plus an option to extend the cover.

The charities who work with Petplan receive 10 per cent of the premium for any full policies they generate. Working with animal charities in this way allowed us to raise more than £2 million for animal charities in 2011 alone.

This scheme also gives new adopters peace of mind. If they have the means to pay for any required veterinary treatment, they are less likely to return the animal to the shelter or request financial support towards vet bills.

Petplan also gives its charity partners a cash boost through its Charity Cheque initiative. Each time a four-weeks-free pet insurance voucher is activated, the charity is automatically entered into a monthly prize draw to win £500.
