Pick the right policy for your pet

Petplan provide a Covered For Life® plan and an Essential plan to help with vet bills – but which one is right for you?
Our Covered For Life® plan provides ongoing help with vet bills and our Essential plan provides short-term help with vet bills. Both plans have an annual renewal and you can cancel at any time at no additional cost. The key difference between the plans is the way the cover for Vet Bills works. Read on to find out more.
Covered For Life® plan

You will hopefully have a long and happy relationship with your pet over many years. Our Covered For Life® plan provides ongoing help with vet bills to support you throughout your pet's lifetime.

The Vet Bills cover refreshes every year when you renew your policy enabling you to continue to claim for the same condition over and over again.

How it works

Our Covered For Life® plan provides ongoing help with vet bills. There is a choice of either £4k, £7k or £12k for vet bills every year.

You can continue to claim year after year for the same condition up to your chosen yearly limit providing you renew with no break in cover. This provides ongoing help with vet bills to cover the cost of treating long term conditions such as eczema or diabetes.

We can pay your vet directly so you don't have to find the money first and our Claims Pricing Guarantee means you'll never pay more for claiming.

Essential plan

If your pet is ill or injured it can be a very worrying time and having Petplan insurance can help you get your pet the care they need. Our Essential plan provides short-term help with vet bills.

Once you reach the monetary or time limit no further cover is provided for that condition but you can claim for any new conditions that arise.

How it works

Our Essential plan provides short-term help with vet bills. You can claim 12 months treatment up to £3,000 per illness/injury.

Once you reach either of these limits, no further cover will be provided for that condition so you will need to fund any further treatment yourself. You can still claim for new conditions.

We can pay your vet directly so you don't have to find the money first and our Claims Pricing Guarantee means you'll never pay more for claiming.

Physiotherapy & pet therapies

Along with physiotherapy, which is covered within the Vet Bills benefit, we also cover Pet Therapies like herbal medicine, homeopathy and acupuncture. You can also claim for hydrotherapy, up to £500 per illness/injury in dogs and cats (no additional limit for rabbits).

Dental illness & injury

Dental illness & injury

Our cover includes the cost of treating dental illnesses and injuries, you just need to make sure you keep up with your pets annual veterinary dental checks.

Cancer treatments

Cancer treatments & injury

With our cover your vet can choose the most appropriate and successful treatment for the type of cancer your pet has such as surgical removal, chemotherapy, immunotherapy and radiation.

Diagnostic tests

Diagnostic tests

We cover the cost of MRI scans, CT scans and ultrasounds so your vet can diagnose problems quickly.

Hereditary conditions

A condition that your pet has inherited or is predisposed to such as hip dysplasia. We will cover conditions that haven't shown symptoms before the start of your policy.

Physical & online consultations

Physical & online consultations

Not all pet insurance policies are the same. At Petplan we design our policies to pay out to help customers get the best care for their pets. We pay 97% of all the claims we receive and with Petplan you won't pay more for claiming.

If you buy your insurance through the Petplan website, you will get at least 10% off your premium for your first year. We also offer a multi-pet discount so if you insure more than one of your animal family with us, you can save £12 per pet, per year.

If you received 4 weeks free Petplan insurance from your vet, breeder or an animal rehoming centre you will receive an additional month free if you continue your cover before your temporary insurance expires.

You can insure a cat, dog or rabbit from the time they are 6 weeks old.

If you want to take out our Covered For LifeⓇ policy, you need to do so before your pet reaches a certain age. This is 10 years old for cats, 8 years old for most breeds of dogs (for certain breeds this can be up to 5 years old) and 5 years old for rabbits.

For dogs and cats that are older than the above limits, you can still take out our Petplan Essential policy, which has no upper age limit.

With Petplan you can cancel your cover at any time with no additional fees. Both our Covered For Life and Time Limited policies renew each year so being covered for life doesn't mean that you are tied in for life.

It is worth noting that many policies do not provide cover for pre-existing conditions so if you do cancel your policy you may not be able to get cover elsewhere for any illnesses or injuries your pet has already suffered.

We know that pet health is complex. For this reason we underwrite all policies at the start of cover and will confirm whether any pre-existing conditions your pet has will be covered by your policy or not. You may have seen specific pre-existing condition policies being offered by other insurers, but it’s worth checking the cover provided because in some instances you would actually have more cover for a pre-existing condition on your standard policy.

When you take out a policy with us, you must tell us about any previous or existing conditions, illnesses or injuries, and we will then confirm whether we can provide cover for these on a case-by-case basis. We may tell you that we can only insure a condition when your pet has been free from it for a certain amount of time, for example.

We will be transparent about what is and isn’t covered, and will include this information in your Certificate of Insurance and terms and conditions.

Dogs and cats are legally required to be microchipped by the ages of eight and 20 weeks old respectively.

Microchipping is a simple procedure that can be done at the vets or a rescue centre among other places. It takes seconds, and usually costs between £10 and £30.

The main benefit of chipping your pet is that it can help you be reunited more easily if they go missing. Chips are scanned using a special device which will show the person scanning it how to get in contact with you. It is important that you keep your details up to date – this can usually be done online via the website of the database company your pet is registered with.
