There’s no better way to bond with your kitten than giving them the things they love and homemade kitten treats are a cost-effective way to spoil your furry friend.

It’s important to make sure the treats you make contain things your pet loves, but are also nutritious. Most cats are lactose intolerant so avoid milk. Other foods, such as chocolate and onions, are also off-limits. And if you’re giving your kitten treats, remember to reduce main meals to ensure they stay at a healthy weight.

Cats prefer to eat little and often so getting your kitten used to eating no more than they need using healthy homemade treats is a good way to regulate their eating habits. It’s also a great way to reinforce your bond and train good behaviour. Make sure your kitten has fresh water at all times.

Cats love fish and chicken and these foods are good for them so these fishy treats are perfect. We’ve even included a catnip recipe for extra excitement.

One tin of salmon

One egg

One cup of plain flour

Blend all ingredients in a food processor until you have a smooth, thick dough.

Roll the dough flat and cut biscuit shapes with a small biscuit cutter.

Cook until golden.

Allow to cool.

One tin of flaked tuna in spring water - well-drained

One cup of plain flour

One tablespoon of dried catnip

One egg

Blend all ingredients in a food processor until you’re left with a smooth, thick dough.

Form the dough into small balls and cook until crisp.

Allow to cool.

140g cooked, shredded chicken breast

15g margarine or sunflower oil

120ml chicken stock

120g plain flour

50g polenta or cornmeal

Cook the chicken breast, cutting away any skin or fat.

Allow to cool and then shred.

Mix the chicken, water and margarine and in a separate bowl mix the cornmeal and flour. Add the chicken slowly to ensure the mixture stays wet enough.

Knead the dough and cut into small treat shapes.

Bake for 20 minutes and allow to cool.

As well as making the treats listed here, you can also use festive occasions, such as Halloween and Christmas, as opportunities to spoil your pet.
